Sarah Kay, an exceptional young poet wrote the beautiful piece titled If I Should Have A Daughter. Click Here to go to the link where a written copy is available for reading. If you have a few minutes, take my advice and watch the Spoken Word version of one of her other poems at the bottom of the page. OR go find the TEDTalk of her performing If I Should Have a Daughter.
It's beautiful.
My favorite line, very pertinent with our recent Minnesota week of rain..
"But that's what rain boots are for, because rain will wash away everything if you let it"
Sarah's words are so eloquently put together that I just seem to get stuck in this thought circle.. what would I say to my future daughter? How would I teach her without shielding her from the experiences she'll need to be strong and independent? How would I help her make her own mistakes without making her feel like I have left her behind?
This all started with a reddit post. I frequent r/writingprompts to find inspiration.. and the first one I saw tonight was "Watch a TED talk and write something inspired by it. I fully intended to write a fiction piece, but I had to get this out first.
