Thesis-Driven Essays

My favorite phrase on writing assignment sheets is "Please write a thesis-driven essay on..." Because you would think that a bunch of English Majors would know that their essays should probably have a thesis. The funny thing is... I SUCK at coming up with theses. I can never figure it out until I have written the whole paper. But because that little phrase is the first thing on the assignment sheet, it blocks my brain. I simply can't do it. My brain is just like... WOAH. RED LIGHT. THESIS. ROAD BLOCK. AHHHHH REVERSE. REVERSE. FACEBOOK. YOUTUBE. ANYTHING BUT THE THESIS.

So.. I end up with days like today.

I have two thesis driven essays to write. One, 1500-1700 words about a piece of writing from the Britain Modernist Journals arguing why it should be studied in a Survey course.. and a second about 3000-3500 words about movies we've watched in my Film Literature course on Sexuality, Race, and Gender issues.

I also have to practice and commit to memory the first 15 lines of Chaucer's General Prologue of the Canterbury Tales. In Old English.

It's gonna be a LONG night.
Always,
BrainDead English Major
